Top 3 misconceptions about your bodies & clothes | STYLE ADVICE

In my personal stylist journey I have met a plethora of women from all walks of life, experiences and tastes. But there are a few commonalities that, no matter your background, are consistently plagues most. I've decided to pluck and address the top three untrue grievances women hold against their bodies and their style.

1. ) Your body is shaped too weird to properly dress.

This is the top grievance that I work tirelessly to eradicate. Every body is beautiful and uniquely made. That does not mean that it is impossible to dress. What IS impossible to dress is self hate and complacency. That is why as a stylist, I actively change the approach to how you view it. Your body isn't weird, THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS. There is no standard sizing system, the size range most women fall in is sold as specialty sizing (AKA PLUS SIZE) and less than 1% of all clothing retailers are consistently advertised above a regional scale. All of this in an effort to sale you a false bill of goods that your body is weird and hard to accommodate. Any seamstress, tailor will tell you different. Mass produced clothes aren't meant to fit you perfectly. They are meant to fit as many people relatively acceptable. Take the time to learn your body and how it's made and you will soon learn of its beauty as a standard that clothes must live up to. Change the narrative.

2. ) Shopping online is too hard and not worth the risk.

Nothing could be further from the truth. And with many malls and standalone stores closing at alarming rates nationwide, it may soon be your only option. I think it's harder to shop in person for most people. Think about it--unless you're in a big city, you as a plus size woman usually have maybe 3 choices--Torrid, Ashley Stewart and JC Penny. Having access to the regional pickings of three places is limiting. You shouldn't accept that as the be all, end all. There are literally thousands of websites for Plus size women covering every need you can't find locally. Plus there are a ridiculous amount of incentives to shopping the store online that aren't offered in person. (That post is coming soon) Do a quick google search or hit up your style BFF who already has dozens or websites organized to fit your needs. (Hint Hint: Click here)

3. ) Body shapes only apply to smaller bodies.

One of the first questions I ask anyone I work with is "What are your measurements and body type". 9 times out of 10 the answers are "I don't know my measurements and I use to be a(n) _____ when I was smaller. " The problem with this statement is thinking larger bodies do not hold there inherent shape. Usually if you are round larger, you were that way smaller. Yes weight shifts, but you can still be a larger version of the same shape. There are just as many hourglass beauties at a size 28 as there are at a size 8. The number on your tag is irrelevant to how your body is naturally formed. You can have the same body type of your younger self, there is just a little more surface area to work with. For example both Salma Hayek and Oprah Winfrey are the same body type. They both execute exquisite style by working with and not against their natural forms.

If any of these misconceptions resonate with you, it's time to revamp. Ask your self a few questions: What do I notice about my body? What do I love about my body? How can I learn more about my body in order to accentuate not only my form, but my personality. If you need a little more help, contact me @ . Let's talk about how to get you in the road to fabulous.

OOTD 12.10.17- Ripping and Runway

Let's be honest--everyday can't be about lounging and relaxing. There is work to do and empires to build. Even during holiday season, the to do list can grow fast--get presents, plan parties, unexpected meet ups with out of town relatives--holiday season is in full swing. But running errands doesn't mean you have to look run over. Let's get into this holiday errand ensemble.

Duster: Similar| Top: Similar | Jeans: Similar | Shoes: Similar

Take your t-shirt and jeans to the next level with a few tweaks. Opt for a simple embellishment on the jeans like the shredded hem or even a rare wash. Jeans universal for the ability to be comfy and chic. Combine that with another staple--the white turtleneck. Even here in Florida it's a crisp 60, so a turtle neck can come in handy. Dusters are the new layering accessory, so use it and use it well. Now to accessorize. A cute headband is casual chic without effort. It can also give you some function by keeping a cute pair of shades at bay. To top it off, grab a pair of silver oxford---they are very on trend and a welcome update to a shoe usually percieved as stuffy.

Running errands never looked so chic, right? What piece is your favorite from the ensemble? Let me know in the comments!

Easy Shoe Hacks

Shoes were the last part of my style for fully form, so it was admittedly my weakest point. But I have created a system for all of my shoes that have saved me time, money and calluses. Interested? Keep scrolling.

This is a quick fix process that all shoes I wear must go through before I wear them. I often find that I don't have time to gradually break them in because the weather calls for an appropriate shoe. I simply fill a small ziplock bag halfway with water and insert it into the shoe. Freeze over night and voila! they are loosened just enough for you to walk comfortably without developing calluses.

Sometimes the rain gets the best of you and the inside of your shoes get wet. And nothing is worse than a shoe that has a damp smell because of sweaty feet/socks. Easy solution? Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda in the bottom of the shoe and place one medium piece of crumpled newspaper inside. let it stay overnight and by morning the shoe will dry and odorless.

Investing in shoe forms is a way to save you money and time. Not only do they protect shoes from retaining moisture, but they also help leather shoes from cracking while keeping its form longer. This is such a invaluable tool for my shoe collection. I have wide fat feet and they often breakdown the form of my shoes shortly after wearing them . That is no longer the case since I have found shoes forms. My favorite shoe forms are from Bed Bath & Beyond, found here.

These are just a few of the tips you can use to reform your own shoe collection. If you have any other tips you have found useful, feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

Project Runway Ashley Tipton drops JC Penny to debut own line | IN THE NEWS

Ashley Nell Tipton is showing no signs of slowing down after her meteoric rise to proninence. At the top of the month, Ashley Nell Tipton Debut her own independent line on her website.

This comes as a surprise to many, due to her successful partner ship with JC Penny. So why the sudden departure? According to Tiption, " Working with JCPenney was quite the experience! But at the end of the day, they’re a corporation, so there were a lot of hands-on things and lots of people approvals had to go through." So she opted out and created her own unique pieces for Fall '17. The overall feel seems to be made for the trendy gal who likes a bit of edge. There are about 25 pieces in the entire Fall collection, nine of them going over $100. Check out some of the other pieces below and  the full collection here.

OOTD 11.03.17

I want to give a little style inspiration for all the happenings of life. As life progresses, so should your style. I thought maybe this December, we would style for all types of holiday gatherings-- company parties at the job, relaxing with friends and family, finishing some holiday shopping or even anticipating new years. Today's look is perfect for a holiday party without much fuss.

Cropped sweater-- Diesel ,  similar  | Metallic skirt-- Harrods ,   similar  | Cocktail Ring -- DFV , similar  | Necklace-- David Yurman , similar  | Purse-- similar  | Shoes--  similar , similar

Cropped sweater-- Dieselsimilar | Metallic skirt-- Harrods,  similar | Cocktail Ring -- DFV, similar | Necklace-- David Yurman, similar | Purse-- similar | Shoes-- similar, similar

If you are looking for comfort, fun and an understated sly, look no further. Dressing up never means anything too flashy. A well placed contrast of fabric will do the trick. I suggest metallic or velvet this season like this outfit's focal point-- the metallic skirt. It moves easily, is a touch of glam and easy to style. I decided to style with classic black because nearly everyone has black and with an already established focal piece, you can afford to keep it simple.

When styling metallics, go for simplicity and texture. The combo is sure to always make an impact. It's a matter of keeping it simple while keeping functionality in mind. Thats why I paired a costume ring and necklace. Nothing too fussy. The heels are of course optional. If you want to be on trend a mule or embellished loafer would also work.  So when you're eyeing the snack table at the office party, or the desert table at the family Christmas dinner, sashay a little harder and give everyone a show. :c)

Shein debuts Plus size section |IN THE NEWS

If you have been with me for a while you know this one thing to be true-- I LOVE SHEIN.COM. It's one of the best fast fashion sites for the plus size diva. The only problem, before now, was that it was Asian based in sizing which meant that it ran small. That has all changed since debuting its own plus size section. It's an admittedly smaller section, but so far, it's so good! Scroll for my top picks and click the pieces you're most interested in.

Scalloped Dress (I would wear this as a top)

Green velvet Skirt

The overall looks from the section gives you a vibe of Forever21 meets River Island. It has a great balance of trend and classics. It does have some typical "big girl" picks, but there are actually pieces that are fly that aren't in the standard section. Go figure.

Gold foil dress

Bell Sleeve top

Losse Jumpsuit

What I love most about this is that it offers everything from formal pieces to ultra casual. It allows the plus size diva to actually have options. The sizing still needs to improve, but it goes up to about a size 20/22 or 4XL. They also give you the model's measurements which is the transparency that many online shoppers long for. You can finally see how the clothes fit what body.

Overall I give them a solid 8 out of 10 overall. Y'all might see me in a few of these picks real soon. 👀 With everything under $50, you can't beat the styles. Which piece was your favorite? Let me know in the comments.

The best kept beauty serum secret you keep in your pantry

In the quest for ever glowing skin and popping curls, I ran across a surprising gem that has paid dividends for my skin and hair. What is it you may ask? Rice water. YES.RICE WATER. Take some time and let it sink in sis. I know I did. I thought I had tripped upon the weird part of the internet, but alas I had not.

Originally started and perfected in a variety of Asian cultures, rice water is a beauty staple for those who want beautiful skin and bouncy tresses. So what are some of the benefits?

  • Smoother skin
  • Smaller pores
  • Repair damaged hair cuticles with natural proteins
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increased hair growth production
  • Blemish reducer
  • Regenerates healthy skin cell production

The best part of it all? You only need uncooked rice and water. There are a few methods that can be employed depending on the amount of work you want to put in.

I found the best recipes and directions from Natural Living Ideas included below

The boiled rice water method

If you want to make a batch of rice water to use all week long in its diluted forms, such as for a facial wash or hair rinse, prepare rice as you normally would, but use two to three times the amount of water the recipe calls for. Once the rice has cooked, strain it out. The leftover water will contain a high concentration of nutrients, but you don’t need to use it at full strength. Instead, dilute about 3 tablespoons of the concentrated rice water into a cup of clean water, which should result in just a slightly milky-looking mixture. Store it in the refrigerator in a covered container. It will last for up to one week.

No-boil quick method

If you’re short on time, you can just add a half-cup of rice to two cups of water and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Strain the rice, and then use the remaining rice water to wash your hair, face or both.

Fermented rice water

If you have a little more time, consider making fermented rice water as it’s believed to be the most effective method of all due to the pH change that occurs during the fermentation process. Fermenting the rice water helps to bring its pH more closely in line to the natural pH of hair, and results in the release of a chemical known as pitera which may promote cell regeneration. While it takes a few extra steps, the results are worth it.

To make it, first follow the no-boil quick method above, but let it sit in a jar at room temperature for about two days – if you live in a warm climate, the fermentation process may be complete in just one day. You’ll know it’s ready when the rice water smells slightly sour. At that point, you can use it to rinse your hair, or as a face wash after diluting with one to two cups of warm water first. Store the remaining solution in the refrigerator.

My favorite technique is the boil method. It works like the best deep conditioner and serum all in one. I saw a difference immediately. My hair was soft, manageable and didn't have any tangles, my main source of hair frustration. AND.MY.SKIN. OMG. After only 3 days I noticed my skin had a toughness that was different than I usually experience. I would wake up with a glow that wasn't greasy.

Will you try this not so new beauty serum? It's inexpensive, low maintenance and best of all, works like a dream. Let me know which way you want to try it in the comments.

Blazing the office: Top blazer/Cardigan picks for workwear

When most women think office wear, they think stiff grey and black pants suits with lots of structure and scants of style. No ma'am ! You can have your own version of a power suit everyday and still be effortless chic. To prove that, we start at the pillar of office wear-- The blazer. It's a staple that is almost a non negotiable part of the office standard. Instead of falling into the same blasé blazer routine, take a few of my current fave finds and spice your Fall office wear with style. Keep scrolling for links.

Old Navy

Pyramid Collection

The first way to break out of the Blazer rut is to change up the color. Call me biased, but green is a great alternative color to blue, black and grey. If you don't want to venture out into hues too bright, opt for an olive or deep green. Each of these picks offer a casual chic touch that can still be dressed up with a crips button up and slacks.

If you are more of a classic grey and black ind of women, no worries. You can still switch it up without much work. Opt for classic prints like grid patterns or a different texture. The smallest changes can add the biggest punch. All of the options offer another new twist--length. Let go of the options that hit you at the hips. For many body types it creates a stumpy look and quickly becomes unflattering. The new standard is all about long silhouettes that draw to longer lines  and a more polished look. Perfect for on or off the clock .

Which piece from the group is your favorite? Let me know in the comments and grab any one of these today.

White House Black Market debuts Plus Size | IN THE NEWS

On October 24, White House Black Market tossed their hat in the Plus Size ring with the release of a Plus Size line . According to the company, “From day one, White House Black Market has been about women — it’s a brand born of women, led by women and dedicated to serving women — so it was a natural fit to expand into Plus so they can make every woman feel confident and powerful to take on their day,” After viewing what they have to offer, I will say that they may be an up and coming contender in the Plus Size arena. Keep Scrolling for my top picks and details.

Pull Over Sweater

Pull Over Sweater

The Plus Size line is offered exclusively online (Insert eye roll) but it goes up to a size 24W , which translate to usually size 26 or even a smaller 28. The price range is lower to mid level range, with the most expensive piece being $226. the overall feel of the collection is definitely Fall and Holiday inspired.

Rose Print Fit-N-Flair Dress

Fringe Dress

Fringe Dress

Pros: I appreciated that they tapped into some of the current trends this season with the velvet, fall florals and reds. They also have multiple cuts of pants and not just one type of dress. The effort and true variety is refreshing. They also have a pretty good balance between standard , classic cuts and playfully styling the trends.

Faux collar wrap vest

Cons: Some of the cuts were not aligned with the usual you expect from WHBM, which is more of a tailored polished look similar to Talbots. I'm also weary of some of the use of florals. I love the red rose print, but the other florals are honestly borderline scream "ugly big girl clothes".

Deconstructed Sequin Jeans

Overall I am pleased that a quality brand like WHBM is offering more inclusive pieces for plus size women. This new trend of expanding into larger sizes, is promising to me and you should check out the rest of the pieces here. Let me know which one was your favorite.

Dressbarn rebrands themselves as Roz & Ali | IN THE NEWS

Another day, another company revamp. This time it is the plus size staple company Dressbarn. Originally started in 1962 as a discount clothing store. Through the years, it has come to be one of the few places plus size women could count on to provide clothing up to sizes 24 and beyond. Now? They are moving in a new direction.

Dressbarn is now aiming to rebrand with a new name and a new look. Roy and Liz is Dressbarn's answer to a push for the ever growing luxury/boutique industry. According to Dressbarn's CEO George Goldfarb, Roz & Ali "is fashion designed with our customer in mind — a place where the entire experience is hers for the shopping.” This will include not only the boutique look, but experience like in store stylists more curated styles. They have already rolled out in 11 states and will be finalized by April 2018. The reception remains to be seen.

I must say that I am presently surprised with this recent revamp and I can't wait to see how they will fully change their format. This new change, in my honest opinion, is much needed and overdue. This is just one of many revamps in the staples we have come to count on as plus size staples. What do you think of this revamp? Let me know in the comments below.

Kate Spade and Keds Unite!

Kate Spade expanded her girly chic empire with a collab with a comfy shoe staple-KEDS. This time around they have a holiday themed collection and Kate does not disappoint. Keep scrolling for pics.

The Classic kids get a girly spritz. Many of the shoes are covered in varying range of colored sparkles and classic Kate Spade New York Prints. My favorites are the Polka dot and silver pairs. Kate puts her classic spin on the shoes with her signature spade on the back vibrant color pairings for her prints.

The collection prices range from $44 (on Sale) to $99, so pretty affordable. Going up to a size 11, these cuties are up for grabs and available for everyone. Tell me which one is your favorite in the comments.

OOTD 10.18.17- Orange Jumpsuit (Workwear Inspo)

I work with many women in corporate industries who want more from their office wear. The simplest advice I can give is try something that speaks to your personality. Sometimes that means color. Other times that may mean killer accessories. Whatever it means to you, know workwear doesn't have to be frumpy. Define your own version of fabulous. If that doesn't come easy to you, take this Outfit of the day (#OOTD) and be inspired. Scroll for outfit details and tips.

*Jumpsuits are a great go to for any body type. Choose wisely by finding jumpsuits that accentuate your favorite asset with favorable draping. This jumpsuit is great for stylistas who are fuller up top. It is a great compromise between fullness without adding bulk.

Jumpsuit * Bag

*Keep it simple and go for solid colors if you want to strengthen your stye muscle. So many stylists in training think style comes with mixing points. It actually starts with mastering the basics of color. Start simple, build consistently and you'll be a pro in no time. This jumpsuit is the perfect Autumn burnt Orange that works on virtually every skin tone.

Ring* Shoes* Bracelet

*A great fit doesn't have to mean tight. Aim for something that you can move easily in. You wear too many hats to feel constricted by fabric. A good fit is one that helps you walk with a smooth confident stride. That can mean a close fit to the body or an oversized cut. This jumpsuit meets in the middle. If you have naturally broader shoulders, the neckline with help accentuate it nicely.

Take this #OOTD and apply it to your own closet with the items you have. If you feel like this outfit can be apart of your new normal, click on the links and grab yours now.

Tracee Ellis Ross to collab with JC Penny on New clothing line | IN THE NEWS

A new exciting collab is right around the corner! Tracee Ellis Ross is teaming up with JC Penny and debuting a full clothing line. Much lauded for her looks on and off the red Carpet, Tracee has cemented herself as as stylista in addition to being an actress. I am very excited at the thought of being able to essentially shop her creativity. Let's have a closer sneak peek look at some of her offerings.

All pictures courtesy of

In true Tracee fashion, the preview cements her quirky mix of classic and fashion forward pieces. According to reports, she will also have accessories and home items in the 40+ piece collection. Some highlights are definitely the "Glow" dress and the modern tuxedo. The best part of all? It will go up to a size 3X and may include the entire collection IN STORES. Tracee is definitely outdoing herself for her debut collection.

When it comes to this line, Tracee herself was very careful to think carefully about what style and fashion meant to her. "I feel that clothing can be your armor and also your joy. I sort of [go] between the two: Sometimes it’s how I protect myself and sometimes it’s how I express myself. I feel like this collection has both—the tux is sort of your armor, and the "Glow" dress is your joy. Everything falls somewhere in between on those."

I love the fact that many of her pieces are oversized and yet inclusive to size other lines often ignore. (The 3X + crowd.) And since this is a celeb collab, yo won't have t worry about the back of the store treatment. The line releases November 12. What pieces are your early faves? Let me know in the comments.

Ciao for Now!

What type of shopper are you? | Style Advice

Over the course of this Labor Day weekend you're probably looking around websites and in stores to find some great deals. It's time like this that you need to remind yourself of what kind of shopper you are. It may seem like it's not necessary, but sometimes knowing the type of shopper you are can help you avoid a few pitfalls.

* Headwrap- Target * Top- Shein * Leggings- Eloquii * Shoes- Forever21 *

The type of shopper you are directly correlates with how you feel about yourself. For example there are insecure shoppers who shop according to what they hate as opposed to what they love.  Not understanding that when you shop like this, you never truly find clothes that you actually want to wear; just clothes that you hate a little less than others.

There's also those of you who are label shoppers-- you don't like to wear clothes unless it is a name brand or unless you get an extreme deal on them.  Sometimes during weekends like Labor Day, weekend prices are spiked up to be cut down only by 20%. It makes it seem like you get a deal when in fact you're paying more for something that cost less not even two weeks ago.  On the flip side, name brands that are making you go to places like outlet malls, don't tell you that the outlet pieces are not manufactured by the same company as their high-end pieces. Then there is the mannequin shopper.

They trust the mannequin or the store display to the point where they will buy it off as is, no questions asked. This just compounds wasting time, energy, money and frustration.  All of these types of shoppers are about the clothes, sales and store,  but not about the most important aspect-- YOU. You should be the most important aspect when shopping. That is why I suggest you become a closet shopper. A closet shopper is someone who knows who they are, and the value in the clothes that they wear. Once you are a closet shopper, you are aware of everything that you wear hats value because you are valuable. No insecure shopper here.

Closet shoppers also know that the label does not dictate quality value. Definitely not a mannequin shopper. You can stop in front of your closet and know that every piece is going to be representative of who you are and what you have to say.  More than that, you can also take a little and make quite a lot. I myself am a closet shopper and I know that I can take just 10 pieces of clothing and dress myself for the whole month. If you want to change the way that you shop , dress ,and style, come join me  here.

Best transitional piece for Summer to Fall

Where at the top of the month of September. That means a few things. First we're only a few weeks away from fall and  the last quarter of the year. More importantly, September marks the transitional period from Summer to fall. . I've already made a huge weather transition going from Chicago to Florida, but I have been able to pick a  piece that allows me to feel comfortable no matter what weather comes my way. Want to know what that piece is? Keep scrolling.

It's the T-shirt dress. It has been a big trend as of lately but I think you should keep it going into the fall season for a few seasons. First it's versatile. You can throw on a skirt or some leggings if it gets too cool or throw it over  a body con for a easy chic look perfect for warm weather. It can be a thinner cardigan or a dress as is. So many  outfit possibilities.

Neiman Marcus                   ELOQUII

T- shirt dresses are also great for so many different body types. Most of these type dresses are looser cut , so you can customize it to fit your shape. Wear a belt, accessorize wth a scarf, or on a transitional day, wear some booties. You get to compliment the best parts of your body. Have a larger belly? Wear it tucked in a maxi skirt or as a long cardigan with a tank and a slim pant. Fuller hips? wrap that scarf at your waist.

Go out and grab a T-Shirt dress or two in time for fall . I've included my picks throughout the post and a few more below.
